A handsome lacquered and chinoiserie-decorated longcase clock by Robert Berry, dating to circa 1740. The five finned-pillar movement, with internal countwheel strike, is of notable quality, behind a dial fitted with a subsidiary seconds dial, a date aperture, and a signed boss in the arch. The case is in particularly good condition, decorated in a manner typical of the early 18th century: chinoiserie detail set against a faux tortoiseshell ground of red and black. Little is recorded about Robert Berry, who appears to have belonged to a clockmaking family working in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. A decorative and collectable early Georgian clock.
