A stunning Georgian flame mahogany longcase clock, crafted circa 1820, signed for J Glover of Manchester. The case is beautifully figured, with a swan-neck pediment topped by brass ball-and-spire finials, turned hood columns, and a shaped flame-mahogany trunk door framed by boxwood stringing and satinwood crossbanding, over a panelled base. The painted arch dial is a highlight, with a rolling moon-phase aperture flanked by twin hemisphere globes, painted figural spandrels to the corners, Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial and a date dial, signed J Glover, Manchester. Behind it is an eight-day bell-striking movement, well maintained and in excellent condition, checked and tested to be in good working order. Brian Loomes lists both a James and a John Glover working in the period around 1820 in Clockmakers of the World. A handsome and richly detailed clock in remarkably stunning condition.
