An exceptional 18th century moonphase longcase clock in beautifully patinated inlaid mahogany, signed Robert Lawson of Leigh. The hood is crowned with a swan-neck pediment, finely carved wooden finials and gilt carved rose paterae, with a verre églomisé panel on a blue ground above reeded brass-gilt columns and a scalloped-edge door. Within, the brass and silvered dial has a painted arch showing the phases of the moon and a maritime scene, signed to the arch “Robert Lawson, Leigh” alongside the motto “Time is Precious”. The eight-day movement is clean, running and striking the hours. The case is superbly made: finely executed inlay and arch moulding, a long figured mahogany door flanked by inlaid quarter columns, a crossbanded and strung base with canted corners and solid timber sides and back, all raised on low ogee bracket feet. Showing only light usage wear, it is an overall excellent, clean clock with beautiful cabinetwork, from a private collection.
