The vine-and-grape frieze is what gives this antique marble fireplace surround its character. Carved in flowing detail across the centre — grapes and trailing vines, the classical symbols of abundance and prosperity — it draws the eye and lends the piece a real sense of movement against the still, creamy white of the statuary marble. The jambs rise in clean classical lines to support a generously proportioned shelf, its depth adding presence to the whole. Carved early in the 19th century, the surround is in excellent condition for its age: the carving sharp, the marble smooth, the structure sound.
