A very fine pair of French 19th century Louis XV style giltwood marquise bergère armchairs, Paris, circa 1890–1900. The ornately carved gilded frames are decorated with floral and acanthus motifs and softly rounded edges, with padded upholstered sides and armrests, raised on four cabriole legs joined by an X-stretcher. The gilding is original, while the burgundy damask upholstery is recent. The pair has had some sympathetic re-gilding and has been reupholstered; wear is consistent with age and use, with only minor fading. Sturdy and ready to use, this is a truly beautiful and highly decorative pair.
