This William Kent chimneypiece is a magnificent 18th century design carved in fine statuary marble. Rosso Levanto inlaid thumbnails enrich the frieze, creating bold contrast against the white marble. Its scale, detail, and provenance confirm it as a rare and important architectural feature.

At the centre, the frieze carries a boldly carved Apollo mask surrounded by a radiating sunburst, while delicate carved decals edge the outer aperture, bringing refinement to the overall design. These motifs reflect Kent’s distinctive neoclassical language, blending Palladian grandeur with sculptural richness.

This chimneypiece came from Clothworkers’ Hall, London. Following the devastating air raid of the 1940s, which destroyed much of the Hall, patrons donated architectural pieces to assist restoration. This fireplace formed part of that effort and was later carefully preserved, having since been gently restored in-house.

The Clothworkers’ Company is one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies of London, founded in 1528 at 50 Fenchurch Street to originally regulate wool finishing before its remit expanded into charitable works. The Hall has endured destruction several times, from the Great Fire of 1666 to WWII bombing, with today’s building being the sixth on the site — connecting this chimneypiece directly to both London’s architectural and social history.

Crafted from luminous statuary marble, the surround combines strength with elegance, while Rosso Levanto accents provide colour contrast and highlight the central plaque. The carving remains crisp, the surfaces show a polished finish, and the piece is in excellent condition and ready for installation.
