A remarkable circa 1830 English, possibly Irish, late Regency style George IV to William IV period reclining armchair, this large-scale piece features a leather-upholstered carved mahogany frame of exceptional quality. The reclining tufted back displays a serpentine molded crestrail with carved bellflower motifs at the sides, above open sides framed by bold anthemion-carved brackets. The long padded arms terminate in scrolled lotus-carved ends, while the deep, thickly padded seat sits above a concealed molded seatrail pull-out compartment housing a removable “gout stool” — a hallmark feature of period reclining chairs designed for comfort and convenience. The front legs are carved with round boss-studded collars and tapering lotus leaves, set on original “wagon-wheel” brass casters, with splayed rear supports completing the design. A rare and exceptional chair, as comfortable for everyday use today as it was nearly two centuries ago.
