This antique Victorian terrestrial globe, circa 1851 with a map updated circa 1915, was produced by W. & A.K. Johnston, widely regarded as the leading globe-making firm of the mid-to-late 19th century. At a full 30 inches in diameter, it stands as the largest model the firm ever created, its surface area vastly exceeding that of a typical 12-inch globe and demonstrating the remarkable scale of craftsmanship required to produce it. The globe’s surface is finely detailed with period-accurate mapping and dense city annotations, reflecting the cartographic standards of its era. Rather than replace such an expensive and elaborate object as world borders shifted, owners historically had the printed plates updated — explaining the later 1915 map date on this earlier 1850s globe. Housed in a striking walnut and brass stand featuring neoclassical detailing, including carved lions’ masks and acanthus leaf motifs, this piece is a rare and imposing addition for collectors of fine antique cartography.
