Fluted columns rise up each side to support a central arch, framing a luminous composition that builds from a spray of pink and mauve flowers below to scrolling bevelled-glass foliage across the top. The glasswork is exceptional: slag, rippled and opalescent sections in warm amber and green, clear bevelled inserts catching the light, and ruby cabochon jewels strung in a delicate swag and scattered through the design for points of brilliance. Though unsigned, the quality of materials and the sophisticated handling of opalescent glass point strongly to John LaFarge, whose work often rivalled Tiffany’s.
