The symbolism is what makes this pair extraordinary. Each leaded panel carries the historic Manchester Coat of Arms, granted to the city in 1842, and every element tells part of the city’s story: the red shield with gold stripes from the medieval lords of Manchester; the ship in full sail for the city’s rise as a trading and industrial hub; the lion for strength and the antelope for harmony and discipline, both drawn from the arms of Henry IV; the motto Concilio et Labore — “By Counsel and Work”; and, most famously, the globe covered in bees, the emblem of industriousness and global reach. Set as a bold central heraldic shield within leaded latticework and a carved wooden frame in antique white, this is a rare late 19th-century Palladian design of exceptional quality.
