The contrast of pale carving against dark marble is what makes this Italian Empire fireplace surround so striking. The body is a richly veined grey-black marble, and against it the neoclassical ornament is picked out in contrasting white carved appliqués — a central oval rosette medallion flanked by delicate laurel swags across the frieze, square corner end-blocks each carved with a paterae, and elegant pendant drops hanging at the head of the jambs. The effect is at once bold and refined, the dark veining giving the piece real depth while the lighter carving stands out in sculptural relief. An exquisite early 19th-century example of Empire craftsmanship, it remains in excellent condition, the carving sharp, the marble beautifully patinated and the proportions harmonious. A superb statement piece for a classical or refined interior.
