The Apollo mask is the heart of this piece. Carved boldly at the centre of the frieze and ringed by a radiating sunburst, it’s the kind of mythological centrepiece William Kent used to give a chimneypiece real authority — and here it’s framed by the cool white of fine statuary marble, with Rosso Levanto thumbnails inlaid along the frieze to throw the carving into relief. Delicate carved detail runs around the outer aperture. It’s a large, architectural surround, gently restored in-house, with crisp carving and a polished, even finish throughout. Ready to install as the commanding focal point of a grand room.
