A large and impressive late 19th-century carved oak kneehole desk, circa 1880, supplied with a matching captain’s swivel chair. The desk is topped by a flat shelf with a raised gallery to the back and sides, above five slim drawers and an open centre, sitting over the main writing surface at a comfortable 30½” height. The base holds ten lockable drawers arranged around the central kneehole, the top right-hand drawer being double height with a separate locking compartment inside. Matching carved foliate detail runs across the drawer fronts top and bottom, complemented by carved mouldings and side panels and a fine pair of spiral-twist columns flanking the base, all raised on a deep carved and moulded plinth. Note the monogram “JL” at the centre of the gallery. Oak drawer linings and back panels throughout, in excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Keys supplied. The accompanying chair is a late-Victorian captain’s desk chair — a tub-shaped swivel chair with an upholstered seat and back, raised on a splayed four-arm base with castors — comfortable, practical and a fitting companion to the desk.
