A superb quality antique English Regency double scroll end sofa, circa 1830, in excellent condition. Built when England was importing the finest mahogany from its colonies, the frame and reeded bolster legs are solid mahogany, and the craftsmanship shows — up-swept scroll end arms with feather scroll mouldings, a well-carved central acanthus leaf pediment flanked by shaped corner rails, deep-buttoned backrest and arms, and moulded cartouches at the tops of the legs. It stands on elegant ring-turned reeded front legs finishing on fine English-made replacement solid brass cup castors on all four legs.
The couch has been newly upholstered to a professional standard in top quality full grain chestnut brown leather — new, free from wear, rips or damage — and studded with traditional metal studs in keeping with the original design. The base has been newly webbed, retaining the original detachable horse hair swab cushion fillings and two bolster cushions, one at each end. The mahogany frame has been hand-cleaned and French polished to a professional standard, giving excellent colour and patination. There are nominal old marks to the leading edges of the frame and legs, but nothing significant for the age, no missing carving, and the frame is solid throughout — no breaks, splits or movement. It sits firm without wobble and seats three to four.
