An exhibition-quality monumental late 19th century mahogany musical longcase clock, circa 1890. The superb dial features an arched, hand-painted moon roller showing the phases of the moon and the date, with pierced and gilded spandrels and an etched centre. The silvered dial carries raised gilded Arabic numerals and a central subsidiary seconds dial, flanked by two further subsidiary dials for Chime/Silent and Whittington/Westminster chimes. The three-train, eight-day movement plays its tunes on eight tubular gongs and strikes the hour on a circular gong, with polished brass weights and a brass and steel pendulum; it has been totally serviced and polished to a very high standard. The fine mahogany case is equally impressive — a carved bracket above a moulded arched frieze with scrolling foliage, sugar-barley-twist hood columns, a bevel-edged hood door with working lock and key, conforming barley-twist columns and a bevel-edged glazed door to the trunk, and a base with an arched panel flanked by scrolling foliage and graduated carved harebells, raised on a shaped plinth. In very good condition throughout. A truly commanding piece.
