A very impressive and elegant Georgian London mahogany longcase clock by Thomas Goddard, circa 1770. This is a fine quality case veneered in choice flame mahogany, with an arched pediment and detailed fretwork, brass-capped hood columns, side glass hood panels and a raised moulded base panel. The superb brass and silvered dial carries blued steel hands, a strike/silent feature to the arch, seconds and date dials, and “Tho Goddard, London” engraved to the cartouche. Behind it is an 8-day, five-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell, retaining its original brass-cased weights. The Goddard family were established London clockmakers working through the 17th and 18th centuries, and this fine example by Thomas Goddard dates to circa 1770.
