A fine quality walnut floral marquetry longcase clock by John Hudson of London, circa 1690. This is a case of small, elegant proportions, with a flat moulded hood pediment above a concave panel, barley-twist front and rear quarter columns to the hood with gilded capitals, and glass hood side panels. The trunk door is set with marquetry panels and a brass lenticle revealing the pendulum, while the base carries bird and floral marquetry panels. The 10″ brass and silvered dial has small winged cherub corner spandrels, a silvered chapter ring engraved “John Hudson, London”, and a gilt matted centre with date aperture and seconds dial. Behind it is a five-pillar, month-duration movement striking the hours on a bell via an outside striking count wheel, with brass-cased weights. A rare and beautiful late 17th-century clock for the serious collector.
