A fabulous antique Georgian oak and walnut crossbanded longcase clock, dating to circa 1720–1740, with a dial signed SAMUEL YOUNG NANTWICH. Young is also recorded working from Bunbury, and made the sundial for Bunbury church in 1749, giving this clock genuine local horological history. The hood is a delight, with a superb pagoda top incorporating lovely blind fretwork and a deep moulding, full turned columns flanking the hood door and half-turned columns to the rear, the door edged in walnut crossbanding. The trunk has a beautifully shaped full-length door, crossbanded in walnut and flanked by further crossbanding, with a fine brass escutcheon, while the base is superbly crossbanded and raised on a pretty shaped plinth. The eight-day movement strikes the hour and sits behind a square brass dial with a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, Roman numerals with Arabic above, and beautiful maiden-head spandrels to the corners. Recently professionally cleaned and serviced, it is in perfect working order and ready to place straight into the home.
